Frequently Asked Questions

Who to choose? Local person, group or project for commendable community service (using your own criteria).  Municipality might consider choosing the one to whom its annual report is dedicated.

Can a deceased person be chosen?  Yes

Can a municipality or school pick multiple winners the same year?  Yes

Who picks winners?  Municipality governing body (e.g. Board of Selectmen, Town Council) selects its municipality’s Tribute winner.  School Award winner is authorized by the school’s Principal.

Can I see a list of my municipality’s previous winners?  Yes by clicking ‘Awards’ and then ‘Honored Ever’

When should award be presented?  Municipal award (Tribute) at annual town meeting or in April (National Volunteer Month).  School Award in November (National Education Month) & ideally during American Education Week (the week before Thanksgiving) at a school assembly.

What to present?  Municipal Resolution (to Tribute winner) or School Award certificate.  See samples by clicking ‘Awards’.

Who presents the awards?  Chief municipal official presents the Tribute.  School Award is presented by the Principal.

Is there a participation fee?  No, but municipalities and schools are invited to donate to Spirit of America Foundation through PayPal or by mailing a check to PO Box 5637, Augusta, ME 04332.

Will winner also be honored above the local level?  Probably with a congratulatory letter or certificate from winner’s County, Maine Secretary of State or Maine Legislator(s).
